Yakushina Sets NCAA Freshman Record on Final Day of 44 Farms Team Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M Track & Field's Sofia Yakushina set the NCAA freshman record in the women's heptathlon with 6,260 points on the final day of the 44 Farms Team Invitational Saturday at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Yakushina capped off a heptathlon campaign for the ages, as the freshman won her debut outing and set the highest point total for a freshman in NCAA history with 6,260. She carried 3,634 points into the final day and continued to build on her dominant performance, opening on top with a wind-aided mark of 6.40m/21-0 in the long jump for the win and 975 points. Yakushina followed that up with second in the javelin after a personal-best throw of 43.07m/141-3 for 726 points, and second in the 800m in 2:12.72 for 925 points, bringing her to the 6,260 total. The freshman's mark also debuts her at No. 3 on the A&M all-time performers list and ranks her as the 10th-best performer ever in the collegiate heptathlon.
Kickstarting the momentum on the track was the women's 4x100m relay quartet of Latasha Smith, Camryn Dickson, Bria Bullard and Jasmine Montgomery secured the teams' fourth-straight title of the outdoor season with a time of 43.04.
Jaiya Covington kept up the winning ways for the Maroon & White, as the junior won the women's 100m hurdles with an all-conditions best time of 12.77. Jasmine Harmon also impressive in the event, claiming a wind-aided best of 13.17 to take fourth. In the men's event, Ja'Qualon Scott also crossed the line fourth with an assisted time of 13.31.
Taking the victories to the field was Winny Bii in the triple jump, as the reigning SEC indoor champion captured her first outdoor victory of the season with a wind-aided leap of 13.74m/45-1.
Ensuring the final victory of the meet was the men's 4x400m team consisting of Eric Hemphill III, Cutler Zamzow, Auhmad Robinson and Kimar Farquharson crossed the line in 3:02.26 which ranks second in the NCAA behind only their own fastest mark. The Maroon & White now boast four of the top-10 marks nationally in the event, with each time having a different lineup of runners.
Taking the charge in the pole vault invitational was Aleksandr Solovev, as he cleared 5.48m/17-11.75 to take second in the event. His mark was a collegiate best and helped him jump from ninth to seventh in the A&M history books. Jack Mann III also took fourth in the event with a clearance of 5.33m/17-5.75. On the women's side, Heather Abadie placed seventh with a successful attempt of 4.28m/14.5.
Luca Santorum added himself to A&M history books in the 800m, as he led the group of three to top-six finishes. The sophomore kicked on the home straight to finish in 1:47.19 which was good for third and debuted him at No. 11 on the A&M all-time list. Caden Norris (1:47.72) and Cooper Cawthra (1:47.87) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Rounding out the results for the women on the track was the Aggie duo in the 3,000m steeplechase. Austin Owen finished as the top collegiate in the event, bringing it home in a personal-best time of 9:51.87 which snatched the No. 12 spot in the history books from running mate Staucie Lees who placed third in the event in 11:03.65.
The women's throws group claimed two top-10 finishes on the day, as Abigail Martin placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 54.28m/178-1, while McKenzie Fairchild claimed ninth in the javelin with a mark of 49.04m/160-11.
The men's 1,500m group also had a good outing, securing five of the top eight spots in the event, with Victor Kibiego pacing the group in a time of 3:45.58. The junior was followed by Ondrej Gajdos in fourth (3:45.82), Gilbert Rono in fifth (3:46.93), Diego Heredia in sixth (3:50.60) and finally Sam Whitmarsh in eighth (3:52.92).
