No. 2 Aggies Take Down No. 1 Georgia for Regular Season SEC Title
Apr 13, 2025 | Women's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team won a tight match against the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs battling it out in a 4-3 victory at Mitchell Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Aggies capture their fourth-consecutive SEC regular season title.
The Aggies finish out the regular season with a record of 23-1 and 14-1 in SEC. This marked the eighth-straight win overall and 68th-consecutive win at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
In a strong start, Nicole Khirin/Lexington Reed took down No. 90 Aysegul Mert/Hayden Mulberry, 6-2, on court 5. The Bulldogs responded as No. 74 Guillermina Grant/Anastasiia Lopata dropped Mia Kupres/Daria Smetannikov, 6-1, on court 3. In a very tight match, Georgia's No. 5 Dasha Vidmanova/Mell Reasco defeated No. 38 Mary Stoiana/Lucciana Perez, 6-3, on court 1 to take the doubles point.
Reed once again was the first to put the Aggies on the board in singles, tying things up at 1-1. Reed claimed court 6 in dominating fashion with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sofia Rojas.
The Bulldogs claimed two courts to extend their lead to 3-1, but the Aggies refused to back down. No. 2 Stoiana gave the Maroon & White a spark, going the distance in a back-to-back tiebreaker match to take down No. 1 Vidmanova, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), and pull the Aggies within one, 3-2.
Minutes later, No. 68 Kupres closed out a fierce comeback knocking down Reasco, 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-3, and evening the score, 3-3, to put all eyes on court 4 for the deciding match.
With a regular season title on the line, it was a back-and-forth match between No. 51 Perez and No. 42 Mert. Coming down to a third set, Perez secured the tie-breaker and the win for the Aggies, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Texas A&M Quote
Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Weaver on Lucciana Perez's clutch performance …
Incredible heart by Lucciana, she was challenging her mind and her body on every single point and, really, I think her heart is what got her across the finish line. She's so tough and has the heart of a champion. She did such a great job of bouncing back and staying in the moment to find a way to get across the finish line. There's a lot of pressure on everyone out there because this is about the biggest stage you have to perform on, but all the credit to Lucciana for getting us to the four points out there.
Coach Weaver on the team battling back after doubles …
Georgia played a really good doubles point, they always play very good doubles, they are one of the best in the nation at it. I thought we played pretty well in doubles, they came up with the big points though. To our team's credit, we just fought and clawed all the way through the six singles matches. Lexington [Reed] got us the quick point in singles, the lone freshman, and I think that really helped when she got us on the board. When we got down 3-1, you could see a formula for us getting those last three matches. All the girls really stepped up on the biggest stage. They showed incredible fight and incredible composure, something we have spoken a lot about with the team in recent weeks. I think we dug deep and really handled ourselves well in some tough situations.
