No. 1 Texas A&M Clinches Series at Mizzou in Extra Innings Thriller
Apr 17, 2025 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 1 Texas A&M softball team clinched the series against Missouri with an extra innings thrilling victory, 4-3, to sweep Thursday's doubleheader after taking game one, 7-5, earlier in the day at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.
Amari Harper broke the 3-3 tie with a one-out moonshot to right field to give Texas A&M (39-5, 13-3 SEC) a one-run advantage in the ninth inning. Emiley Kennedy struck out the first two batters in the bottom half before Kramer Eschete chased a fly ball down at the warning track to secure the 4-3 victory.
Texas A&M scored in the opening frame after Harper walked and advanced to second on a ground out before Mac Barbara singled to right field to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Starter Sydney Lessentine sat down the first five Tigers she faced before yielding a one-out walk and striking out the next two batters to end the second inning.
The Aggies added to their advantage in the third inning after Harper scored on a Koko Wooley single to left field to lead 2-0. Harper earned a one-out walk and advanced to second after Mya Perez walked before the pair advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch.
Missouri (22-26, 3-14 SEC) and Texas A&M traded a pair of scoreless innings until Wooley drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout and came home on a ground out to make it 3-0 in the top of the sixth. Lessentine pitched 5.1 scoreless innings before being pulled while being responsible for the runners on the corners. Emily Leavitt entered the circle with one out, while the ensuing batter doubled to right center to trim the Aggie lead to two in the bottom half, 3-1.
Kennedy entered the seventh inning with a runner on first and struck out the first batter she faced before walking the following batter and a ground out had Tigers on second and third. Mizzou evened the score with a two-out single up the middle before the Aggie ace struck out her second batter of the inning to send the game into extra innings.
Wooley began the eighth inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a throwing error. Texas A&M spoiled the golden opportunity after an infield popup and a failed squeeze bunt attempt as Wooley was thrown out at home. Kennedy forced a ground out to begin the bottom half before recording back-to-back swinging strikeouts to end the frame.
Kennedy earned the win moving to 16-3 going 3.0 innings and striking out six while yielding two walks, one hit and one run. The All-American recorded four strikeouts in the final five outs of the game.
