Aggies Close Spring Slate with 2-1 Victory over Houston
Apr 19, 2025 | Soccer
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M soccer team had a triumphant end to its spring exhibition season with Friday's 2-1 victory over the Houston Cougars at Ellis Field.
The Maroon & White pounced on the Cougars in the 15th minute with a goal by Trinity Buchanan. Savannah Hutchins sent a shot in from the right corner of the box. The missile deflected off a defender and Buchanan put the carom into goal with a header.
The Aggies had a chance to increase the lead early in the second half, but Houston's goalkeeper saved a penalty kick shot by Taylor Jernigan.
The Cougars knotted the match at 1-1 with 19 minutes remaining as Blake Hodgson found the back of the net.
The Maroon & White wouldn't be denied with Jernigan make amends for her missed PK opportunity. The Aggie junior scored from 15 yards out on an assist from Holly Storer.
The Aggies overwhelmed the Cougars in the first half, owning a 10-1 edge in shots, including 3-1 in shots-on-goal.
Things got tighter in the second half and the final numbers had A&M owning a 14-9 advantage in shots, including 5-4 in shots-on-goal. The final corner kick margin was 5-4 in favor of the Aggies.

On the spring...
"I'm pleased with the positive development and improvements that our team and players have made over the past few months of the spring. Getting the 2-1 win tonight showed the confidence and grit of this really young team. To go undefeated in the last six matches is a great way to wrap up the spring, especially with three nice victories down the stretch. It gives us a lot to build on for the fall."
On the goals...
"That was a brave header by Trinity (Buchanan) in the first half to give us the lead. Then TJ (Taylor Jernigan) scored a really impressive goal in the last 15 minutes of regulation. She brought down a nice cross from Holly (Storer) and beat her defender with a nice first touch. The ability to follow that with a blast into the upper corner with the second touch was outstanding."
On the grit of the team...
"The strong south wind was clearly a big factor in the match as both teams had more scoring opportunities when the wind was behind them. I'm proud of our players for bouncing back and getting the win after we had relinquished our lead on a really nice shot by Houston which caromed off the far post and in."
UP NEXT...
The Aggies return to Ellis Field for a pair of preseason exhibition matches. They host Rice on August 6 and three days later they welcome UTRGV to the Brazos Valley.
