Four Aggies Earn All-SEC, Weaver Named Co-Coach of the Year
Apr 23, 2025 | Women's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M Aggies pulled in a substantial haul as the SEC season tennis awards were announced Wednesday morning. Mark Weaver was named SEC Co-Coach of the Year while four Aggies earned All-SEC recognition.
Mary Stoiana and Nicole Khirin were named to the All-SEC First Team while Mia Kupres and Lucciana Perez earned Second Team distinction. Texas A&M led all schools with four all-conference performers.
It marked Stoiana's fourth All-SEC honor, including three times as a first-teamer. Khirin, who also earned All-Big 12 First Team as a freshman at Texas, claimed her second All-SEC First Team spot. Kupres picked up her third All-SEC, sandwiching second-team spots around 2024's first-team recognition. Perez repeated on the second team.
Weaver, who shared this year's honor with Georgia's Drake Bernstein, picked up his third SEC Coach of the Year award, adding to his 2022 and '23 laurels.
Stoiana's senior campaign is putting an exclamation point on Texas A&M's greatest women's tennis career. She owns a 25-5 singles record, including 17-3 in dual action and 21-5 against nationally ranked opponents. A three-time SEC Player of the Week this season, Stoiana ran her career tally to 12 SEC POTWs. Balancing a busy schedule she advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Championship, as well as winning the gold medal with Team USA at Master'U BNP Paribias Championship in December and claiming her first pro singles title, the ITF W75 Edmond Open in October. In February, Stoiana became the Aggies' career leader in singles wins and now owns a 135-19 record. In March she earned the prestigious Hurd Award. Stoiana beat this year's SEC Player of the Year Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia in straight sets twice in April, but dubiously did not take home her third consecutive SEC Player of the Year award.
Khirin earned All-America status in the fall, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship. The highlight of the run was a victory over then-No. 4 Connie Ma of Stanford. Khirin currently boasts a 29-6 overall singles mark, including 4-1 at No. 1 and 13-2 at No. 2. She owned a 7-3 record in SEC regular-season action and sports a 14-6 mark against nationally ranked opponents. Khirin supplied the winning point in the Aggies' 4-3 victory over No. 11 Auburn with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Ava Hrastar. She also delivered the winning point in A&M's victory over No. 11 Texas in the quarterfinal round of the ITA National Indoor Championship. Currently sporting a 23-5 doubles mark, Khirin has found her groove teamed with Lexington Reed. The duo owns a 14-3 ledger, including a 9-2 record in SEC play. She also teamed with Jeanette Mireles for an 8-1 mark before Mireles' injury.
Kupres boasts the most Aggie wins in dual action with a 20-4 mark, including 10-2 in SEC regular season play. She sports a 23-6 overall record, including 6-0 at No. 2 and 14-4 at No. 3. She owns eight ranked wins with the most prestigious coming against No. 12 Julia Garcia Ruiz of Oklahoma. She teamed with Stoiana to topple No. 12 Jade Otwy/Isabel Pascual of TCU in doubles. Kupres owns 14 victories in doubles dual action, including four wins against ranked duos.
Perez boasted a 12-0 singles record in SEC regular-season play, stringing together a 14-match win streak. She put a cap on the regular season by earning her first SEC Player of the Week honor following her championship clinching point in a winner-take-all SEC title match against No. 1 Georgia. Overall Perez ix 22-4 including 18-3 in dual matches. She owns a 6-2 record in ranked matches, including a 6-3, 6-1 win against No. 28 Merna Refaat of Auburn. Perez owns a 15-5 doubles mark, including 5-2 against ranked opponents. In doubles action, she teamed with Stoiana to take down No. 7 Savannah Broadus/Vivian Yang of Pepperdine, 6-4.
Weaver guided the Aggies to their fourth consecutive SEC regular season title. In the post season, he also skippered A&M to its fifth consecutive SEC Championship finals appearance. The Maroon & White enter NCAA Tournament action with a 25-3 record with a 12-3 mark against top 25 teams. This season, Texas A&M stretched its Mitchell Tennis Center win streak to 68 matches.
