Apr 27, 2025 | Baseball
AUSTIN – The Texas A&M baseball team dropped the finale of the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown at No. 1 Texas, 6-5, Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Aggies (24-19, 8-13) opened the scoring for the second straight game as Caden Sorrell plated Jace LaViolette, who reached on a one-out walk, with an RBI double to right center in the first. Later in the frame, Bear Harrison stretched the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to center.
In the third, the Longhorns (37-5, 19-2) evened the score at 2-2 behind an RBI double and sacrifice fly.
Following an intentional walk to LaViolette that loaded the bases in the fourth, Wyatt Henseler came through for the Maroon & White with a two-out, two-run single to put them back in front, 4-2. In the bottom half, Myles Patton worked around trouble behind a pair of stellar defensive plays from Sorrell in right.
Texas pulled within one in the sixth on a wild pitch and later took its first lead of the afternoon, 5-4, on a two-out, two-run single up the middle.
Sorrell immediately answered in the seventh with a monster opposite field solo home run that traveled 414 feet and left the bat at 107 mph. The long ball marked the seventh of the year for the sophomore.
After the Longhorns regained the lead, 6-5, with an opposite field solo homer to left in the eighth, the Aggies looked to respond in the ninth as the tying and go-ahead runs reached with only one out. A double play ended the scoring threat for the Maroon & White as they dropped the finale, 6-5.
Inside the Box Score
The Aggies return home to Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park for a midweek contest against Lamar Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
