Aggies Finish as Runners-Up at SEC Championship
Apr 27, 2025 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 16 Texas A&M Aggies finished second at the SEC Men's Golf Championship, dropping a 4-1 decision to the No. 8 Florida Gators in Sunday's final on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club.
With the 2025 effort, the Maroon & White built on their legacy as one of the most consistent of the SEC's elite teams. They played in the semifinal round for the sixth consecutive season and seventh year overall and the Maroon & White are the only team to participate in the match play all eight years.
The Aggies advanced to the finals match for the second time in the eight years the conference has used an eight-team match play bracket.
Ol' Sarge's charges triumphed over the Bulldogs, 4-1, in the morning to earn a place in the semifinal round for the fifth consecutive season. The test was tougher in the afternoon with the Aggies prevailing over the Crimson Tide, 3-2, with freshman Wheaton Ennis needing 19 holes for the clincher.
The match was tied most of the way, including the teams being square at 2-2-1 at the turn. Florida was able to grab momentum with by securing the first two points. Luke Poulter bested the Aggies' Jaime Montojo, 4&3 and Matthew Kress earned a 5&4 decision over Aaron Pounds.
The Aggies led in two of the pairs as late as No. 15, but Zack Swanwick won consecutive holes on Nos. 16 and 17 to earn the clinching point over Wheaton Ennis.
Phichaksn Maichon played brilliant golf in an epic affair with Florida's Jack Turner. Maichon ultimately earned the 2UP decision to avoid the sweep and was carding a brilliant 6-under through 16 holes.
The final point went to Florida's Ian Gilligan. Michael Heidelbaugh won two of the first three holes, but Gilligan clawed back. The pair were knotted from Nos. 6-10 before Gilligan took advantage of Heidelbaugh bogeys on Nos. 11 and 13 to claim the match 2UP.

On the team's effort...
"You come here hoping to have a great week and to get this far and have a chance to win that big trophy at the end, that's pretty awesome. They did a heck of a job. They stuck out that big match yesterday in the afternoon and turned around and ran into a great Florida team. It didn't go our way today, but they did a hell of a job."
On Sunday's wind changing the dynamics of the match...
"It definitely changed things. It gave up some scores. I'm sure from what I was seeing there was more birdies being made and not nearly as many bogeys. But at the end of the day, it's mano a mano and you have to handle the guy across from you and Florida did a hell of a job. They got us today."
On building off the strong effort going into NCAA play ...
"It sets you up for a nice 'chin up' moment. We'll get back home get settled back in and realize that there's more golf to go. But this will sting for a little bit as it should. You don't get many opportunities in the sport to win a huge team competition. Florida got us this time and hopefully next time we get here we'll come out on top."
