Aggies Win “Mo” Morial Invitational in Convincing Fashion

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 20 Texas A&M women's golf team won by a historic 38 shots at the 2025 "Mo" Morial Invitational behind Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio's second collegiate victory Tuesday at Traditions Club.
"We have struggled this season to put together a really good one in the final round, so to do it at home and on a really tough golf course is great," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "The way they played today has been what we have been looking for all year. I am proud of them because we overcame some challenges. This is also a special week to be able to celebrate the Welsh family. Most importantly, I think we represented what she represents. We had a ton of fight this week and this was another step forward in coming together as a team as the postseason comes next week."
Texas A&M took home its first win this season and shattered the previous 25-shot margin of victory record in the "Mo" Morial. The previous record was set in 1996 by Texas A&M. The triumph marked the eighth "Mo" Morial win for the Aggies and the second in as many tries for Chadwell as the Texas A&M leader.
The Maroon & White shot 16-over thru 54 holes and Northern Colorado collected runner-up honors at 54-over. In the final round, the Aggies carded a 7-under 281 which was the only under-par round for a team this week.
Fernández García-Poggio collected her second collegiate victory with a 2-under thru three rounds. The Spainard was the only golfer in the field to have two rounds below par in the tournament. She was followed by her teammate Vanessa Borovilos who claimed second place at 1-over. For Borovilos, it was her fourth top two finish of the year.
"This is already a very special tournament for us," Fernández García-Poggio said. "I feel good with my game right now and I know this will give us a lot of confidence heading to SECs next week."
Kynadie Adams and Mia Nixon wrapped up the "Mo" tied for seventh at 11-over. Sky Sudberry climbed 22 spots on the player leaderboard into solo 12th after firing a 2-under Tuesday. Lauren Nguyen, who competed as an individual, tied for 25th at 19-over.
Jamie Welsh of Oklahoma City University played as an individual and is the niece of the late Monica Welsh. The senior tied for 50th and is the No. 46 ranked player in the country on the Scoreboard.clippd.com NAIA rankings.
"Mo is a legacy in so many different ways," Welsh said. "Of course, the golf is one thing, but the way people flocked to her as a person is what this tournament stands for. Seeing the light that the Texas A&M girls bring to the game has been a joy to be able to experience this week."
