No. 16-Seed Aggies Open the NCAA Tournament Versus Rice
May 02, 2025 | Men's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 16-seed Texas A&M men's tennis team opens the 2025 NCAA Championships with a first-round matchup against the Rice Owls at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
The 16-10 Aggies, who placed fourth in the ultra-competitive SEC, advanced to the NCAA postseason for the 32nd straight year and are hosting the First & Second Rounds for 18th time since the NCAA implemented the 64-team draw in 1999. The Aggies have compiled a 30-4 record in NCAA First & Second Round matchups on their home court.
The Maroon & White face a common foe in the Rice Owls (16-9), who they beat earlier this season and also defeated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season. If the Aggies advance, they would take on the winner of Baylor and Nebraska on Sunday.
Leading the Aggies into the tournament are freshman Theo Papamalamis and junior Togan Tokac, who both tallied 13 singles victories in dual match play. Papamalamis, who earned first-team All-SEC honors and was named to the All-Freshman Team, was 13-8 on court 1, while Tokac was 10-4 at court 5 and 3-0 at court 6. The pair also pace the Aggies in doubles with a No. 4 national ranking and a team-best 9-4 dual match record (all at court 1).
The Owls just claimed the 2025 AAC Championship with a 4-2 win over Memphis. When the two teams squared off earlier this season, the Aggies claimed a 6-1 win. All six singles players secured wins, including Papamalamis, JC Roddick, Alan Magadan, Luke Casper, Tokac and Matthis Ross.
