Aggies Face Top-Ranked Demon Deacons in NCAA Super Regionals
May 08, 2025 | Men's Tennis
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 16-seed Texas A&M men's tennis team takes on the No. 1-seed Wake Forest Demon Deacons in NCAA Super Regional action on Friday at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. First serve for the round of 16 matchup is set for 4 p.m.
The winner of Friday's clash advances to the NCAA Championships, which will be contested at Baylor University's Hurd Tennis Center in Waco from May 16-18. The Aggies and Demon Deacons have faced off 10 times previously with the Maroon & White holding an 8-2 series advantage. Wake Forest, however, won the most recent matchup in 2018 with a 4-3 win in the NCAA semifinals on the way to the program's first-ever national title.
The Aggies (18-10 overall) clinched their spot in the Super Regionals by tallying a pair of tight victories over Rice (4-2) and No. 19 Baylor (4-3) in the NCAA First & Second Rounds last weekend at the Mitchell Tennis Center, while the 36-1 Demon Deacons posted 4-1 wins over Gardner-Webb and No. 32 Kentucky on their home courts.
Freshman Theo Papamalamis' clutch three-set win over No. 33 Devin Badenhorst at the No. 1 line clinched the Aggies' 4-3 win over the Bears on Sunday afternoon. The Aggies earned the doubles point vs. BU with wins at the No. 1 and 2 lines and then grabbed the match victory with triumphs at court 6 by Damien Salvestre, court 2 by Alan Magadan and Papamalamis at court 1.
Papamalamis, from Lessy, France, leads the team in singles victories in dual match action with a 15-8 record, all coming at the first line. Also entering Super Regionals with double-digit dual match wins in singles are junior Togan Tokac (14-5), sophomore Tiago Pires (13-5) and senior Luke Casper (12-12).
Leading the way for the Aggies in doubles is the No. 4-ranked tandem of Papamalamis and Tokac, who have compiled a 10-4 record with six wins over ranked opponents since joining forces for the first time in January.
In his 19th season at the helm of the Texas A&M men's tennis team, Steve Denton has led the Aggies to the NCAA postseason in 17 of his 18 previous seasons with the lone exception being pandemic-marred 2020 season. The Maroon & White have advanced to the Sweet 16 nine times under Denton, the Elite 8 three times and the Final Four once in 2018.
