Jul 28, 2025 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – Texas A&M football standouts Le'Veon Moss and Marcel Reed were named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Maxwell Award, which is presented annually to the outstanding player in college football.
Moss, a senior running back from Walker, Louisiana, rushed for 765 yards and 10 touchdowns on 121 carries before his 2024 season prematurely ended with an injury in the Aggies' ninth game against South Carolina. A second-team All-SEC pick, Moss's 85.0 rushing yards per game ranked No. 3 in the SEC last season. Among conference players with at least 100 carries, the hard-running Moss ranked No. 2 with a 6.3 yards per carry average and lost just three yards all season, which led the league and was No. 2 among all FBS players. Moss got stronger as the game progressed, averaging 7.4 yards in the second half compared to 5.5 in the first two quarters.
Reed, a redshirt sophomore quarterback from Nashville, Tennessee, passed for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns while completing 61.3% of his attempts and rushed for 547 yards on 116 carries last season. In his first season as a starter, the electric Reed led all SEC quarterbacks with a 4.7 yards per carry average while his 49.4 rushing yards per game and seven rushing scores ranked No. 4 among league signal-callers. He was a two-time SEC Freshman of the Week, and he was named the Davey O'Brien National QB of the Week and Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Week after coming off the bench to spark a second-half comeback victory over No. 8 LSU on Oct. 27.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 11, 2025, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 25, 2025. The winner of the 89th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 11, 2025. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards on Friday, March 13, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia.
