Aug 16, 2025 | Soccer
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M soccer team continues its season-opening four-match home stand when the Aggies host the Lamar Cardinals for Sunday's 7:30 p.m. match at Ellis Field.
The Maroon & White are coming of a 1-1 draw against the Baylor Bears in Thursday's season opener. Leah Diaz scored the first goal of the season for the Aggies.
While Texas A&M returns just one starter from last year's squad, they boast a roster with tons of starting experience, including eight players who started 14 or more Division I matches last season. The new-look Aggies welcome 10 transfers this offseason, including All-Mountain West Conference midfielder Trinity Buchanan, Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Year Erica Defferding, All-AAC forward Leah Diaz, All-Big West First Team forward Kaylee Noble and West Coast Conference All-Freshman defender Bella Yakel.
Texas A&M is excited with the addition of five talented freshmen, including Bailey Cate, Riley Crooks, Lucy Landherr, Tessa Lavender and Holly Storer. Redshirt freshmen Emma Hoang and Mary Claire Torn are also expected to make contributions after missing their rookie campaigns due to injury.
The Aggies own a 2-0-0 edge in the all-time series. In last season's opener, Texas A&M topped Lamar, 5-0, in Beaumont. Kat Campbell scored a goal in her first career game. Taylor Jernigan tallied two assists and Kennedy Clark added a helper. Maysen Veronda earned her first career shutout with three saves. The Aggies' other win in the series came in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament when then-No. 6 Texas &M topped the Cardinals 1-0 for their school-record 14th consecutive victory.
Former Aggie assistant coach Nathan Kogut is in his fourth season at the helm of Lamar. Lamar returned 14 players from last year's 5-8-6 squad. Cena Carlson was the leading scorer among returnees, logging 11 points on four goals and three assists. Maddie Rich returned for her third season in goal after recording a 1.02 goals-against average in 2024. The Cardinals' top newcomer is junior college transfer Lauren Smith who notched 37 goals and 17 assists in two seasons at Meridian Community College.
The Cardinals dropped a 4-1 decision at Louisiana to start the season. Smith scored Lamar's lone goal in the opener.
