BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M's Cashius Howell was named SEC Defensive Line Player of the Week after helping lead the way for the Aggie defense in the victory over Utah State. The accolade is the first SEC weekly honor of Howell's career.
Howell, a Kansas City, Mo., native recorded a sack in three consecutive plays on one drive in the second quarter for a combined loss of 21 yards to force a three-and-out. It's the first time a player has recorded three straight sacks since Wisconsin linebacker Jack Cichy accomplished the feat during the 2015 Holiday Bowl. Howell also became the first Aggie to record three sacks in a game since Edgerrin Cooper in 2023 against Alabama. The defensive end finished the game with four tackles.
The senior helps anchor a defense that ranks No. 11 in FBS in tackles for loss per game (9.0). Howell ranks No. 12 among FBS players with 35+ pass rushes with an 87.4 pass rush grade, according to Pro Football Focus.
Howell was also named the East-West Shrine Bowl's Breakout Defensive Player of the Week, which is awarded to an all-star game eligible defensive player that displayed the most NFL traits that week. Texas A&M travels to No. 8 Notre Dame on Saturday, September 13 for a 6:30 p.m. CT kick. Notre Dame is 0-1 after a 27-24 road loss at Miami during its season opener on August 31.
