No. 22 Baseball Run-Rules UIW, 11-1, in Midweek Bout

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – No. 22 Texas A&M tallied 12 hits in seven innings to run-rule UIW, 11-1, in midweek action Tuesday afternoon from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
 
Juan Vargas (1-0) earned the win and faced the minimum through 3.0 innings as the starter. The Panama City, Panama, native induced six pop-ups, one groundout and struck out two to retire the Cardinals in order. Gavin Lyons followed in relief, allowing one run in 2.0 innings. Cole Hubert entered in the sixth inning, allowing two hits and striking out two.
 
Josh Stewart earned his first career save after entering with the tying run at the plate with two outs. The righty punched the batter out on three pitches and went on to strike out the side in the top half of the seventh to complete his dominant outing.
 
Jake Duer paced the Aggies offensively, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a 389-foot solo home run, three RBI and two walks. Gavin Grahovac added three RBI, including a pair on a two-out double off the right field wall. Jorian Wilson blasted his second home run of the season in the seventh inning, travelling 383 feet with a 106 mph exit velocity and a 41-degree launch angle. The freshman outfielder ended his night 2-for-4 at the dish with two RBI and a run scored.

Wilson was thrown out attempting to score on a Kiel ground ball to third base. Kiel stole second, and Sorrell was intentionally walked to load the bases. Grahovac was hit by a pitch to plate a run and Duer drove a single to left field to chalk two more runs. A&M 7, UIW 1.
 
B7 | Partida reached first on a leadoff walk and scored when Wilson homered to right-center field. Harrison followed with a sharp double down the left field line, moving to third on a Chestnut single. Chestnut stole second base and Kiel walked on four pitches to load the bases. Sorrell plated a run on a sacrifice fly to right field which also advanced Chestnut to third. Kiel advanced to second on a defensive indifference. Duer walked to load the bases once again, and Boston Kellner completed the run-rule victory after being hit by a pitch to score the final run. A&M 11, UIW 1.
 

GAME NOTES
  • Tuesday's midweek marked the 10th meeting all time between the two clubs.
  • With the win, the Aggies are 9-1 against the Cardinals, including the last six straight.
  • Vargas made the first start of his career and did not allow a single baserunner.
  • Stewart earned the first save of his collegiate career, striking out all four batters he faced.
  • Duer has hit safely in his last eight games and has reached base safely in all 12 contests this season.
