Lessentine Deals Shutout to Clinch Series Win over No. 14 Mississippi State

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M's Sydney Lessentine tossed her first career SEC shutout as No. 11 Texas A&M secured the series over No. 14 Mississippi State with a 4-0 win Saturday at Davis Diamond.

Lessentine limited the Bulldogs to a .130 batting average, allowing just three hits while holding Mississippi State hitless (0-for-9) with runners on base. Kennedy Powell, Tallen Edwards, Micaela Wark and Maddie Sauni each drove in a run. Hailey Golden, Ariel Kowalewski, Kelsey Mathis and KK Dement each crossed the plate.

 

Mississippi State (34-13, 6-11 SEC) threatened early, using a one-out single and a walk in the first inning, but the Aggie defense erased the rally with a 6-4-3 double play. The Bulldogs opened the second with a single before A&M turned another 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.

Texas A&M (33-12, 13-4 SEC) capitalized on six free passes in the second inning, including three walks and two hit batters, to score two runs before a 30-minute rain delay halted play with one out and the bases loaded. Following the delay, Edwards worked a walk to extend the lead to 3-0. The Aggies left the bases loaded after a strikeout and groundout.

Wark added an insurance run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring pinch runner Golden to lead 4-0. Lessentine induced a flyout, ground out and foul popup to secure the victory.

 

Sunday's series finale is slated for 1 p.m. on SECN+ with Will Johnson (play-by-play) and Donna Conrad (analyst) in the booth.
