COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M announced Friday that its annual Maroon Out Game will be held Friday, Nov. 27, when the Aggies host Texas in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown at Kyle Field.
The Maroon Out tradition began in 1998 when tens of thousands of Aggies attending the Texas A&M-Nebraska game were encouraged to wear maroon, creating a sea of maroon throughout Kyle Field.
Following Texas A&M's 28-21 upset of the second-ranked Cornhuskers, Nebraska fans acknowledged the impact of the Maroon Out atmosphere. The Daily Nebraskan captured the scene on Oct. 12, 1998, saying "A game that was dubbed a 'maroon-out' for Texas A&M fans proved to be lights out for Nebraska. The fans dressed themselves in maroon T-shirts in an attempt to wash out the red and white that opponents have gotten used to. It worked."
Since then, the Maroon Out Game has grown into a student-led tradition that promotes unity among former, current and future Aggies. Each year, thousands of Maroon Out shirts are sold, with proceeds supporting campus traditions.
