MILWAUKEE – The No. 8 Texas A&M volleyball team stumbled against a strong defensive effort from the No. 11 SMU Mustangs Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-20) in their final match of the Jeep AVCA First Serve at the Fiserv Forum.
Natalie Ring led the offense for the second-straight match with 13 kills and Megan Fitch registered the second double-digit kills game of her career as she added 10.
The two teams traded points early before SMU (1-0) pulled away and maintained its distance for much of the first set. Texas A&M (0-2) didn’t back down and eventually put together four straight points to knot things at 22. The set was tied on three other occasions before SMU secured the opener.
The Maroon & White appeared to steal the momentum early in the second set until three straight points for the Mustangs forced a Texas A&M timeout before the media. SMU remained in control the rest of the way and scored the final three points of the set to close it out.
An 8-2 run created distance for the Mustangs midway through the final set to create an 18-13 advantage. The Maroon & White were unable to get closer than three the rest of the way.
