COLLEGE STATION – The No. 8 Aggie volleyball team opened the Texas A&M Invitational with a win over GCU Friday morning at Reed Arena, 3-1 (25-15, 25-17, 15-25, 25-13).
Sharp spearheaded a dominant offensive showing to secure Texas A&M’s (1-2) first win of the season. The middle blocker recorded 12 kills, hitting at .647 percent while adding six blocks.
The Aggies kicked off the set with a 6-0 run behind Gabi Rodriguez at the service. A&M continued to push offensively led by Eliza Sharp who recorded five kills on five sings hitting at a perfect 1.000 percent. A&M kept its foot on the gas, never letting the visitors get close and taking the opener by 10 points, 25-15.
In similar fashion to the first frame, Rodriguez spurred an early 6-1 advantage with her serve and tallied an ace in the run. The Maroon & White’s diverse attack extended the lead, as four players accounted for seven kills in A&M’s next nine points, 15-8. The visitors shrunk the gap to three, but the Aggies closed the set on a 7-2 run to take a two-frame lead, 25-17.
GCU came out firing and took the third, 25-15, however A&M responded in the fourth behind Megan Fitch’s six kills to hold an impressive 11-point lead late, 18-7. The Aggies left nothing to chance, closing the set and match, 25-13.
