FRISCO, Texas – The No. 2 seed Texas A&M men's golf team fell to top-seeded Texas, 4-1, in the championship match of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup on Wednesday at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas.
Texas jumped out in front early and never trailed, closing out three of the five matches before the 18th hole.
Freshman Landon Ashcraft picked up the lone point for the Aggies, rolling to a 6&4 victory over Adam Villanueva in Match 3, the most decisive result of the day for either side.
The rest of the lineup went Texas' way. Eduardo Derbez opened the day with a 4&2 win over Kris Kuvaas in Match 1, and Daniel Bennett edged Aaron Pounds 1 up in Match 2, giving the Longhorns an early cushion.
Third-place stroke-play finisher Shiv Parmar, who carried the Aggies with a team-best 6-under performance over 54 holes, pushed his match with Matt Comegys to the 15th hole before falling 2 up. Wheaton Ennis, fresh off climbing into fourth place individually during stroke play, dropped his match to Brooks Harper, 4&3, in Match 5.
With the loss, Texas A&M closes out the Jackson T. Stephens Cup as stroke-play runner-up and match-play finalist, a strong showing to close the fall portion of the schedule. The Aggies advanced to the championship match on the strength of a 4-under 860 across 54 holes of stroke play, punctuated by Parmar's career-best third-place individual finish and Ennis' fourth-place showing.
