COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M soccer team returns to Ellis Field Sunday when it takes on the Florida Gators for a 2 p.m. contest.
The return of Taylor Jernigan and Ciara Jade Mitchell has given Texas A&M a true hold-up presence up front, allowing Ireland Churchill and Trinity Buchanan to combine underneath. Jernigan was in strong form before suffering a season-ending injury last year, recording six points on two goals and two assists through nine games. Her start against Alabama marked her first in over a year as she continues her return to the Aggie attack.
The Aggies (4-6-0, 0-3-0) currently sit 14th in the SEC standings with zero points after the third week of conference play. Texas A&M aims to earn their first points of the season against a Florida side who has not won away from home all year.
Last time out, the Maroon & White lost a 1-0 nail-biter to No. 7 Alabama in last Friday’s action at Ellis Field. Despite the result, head coach Bobby Shuttleworth praised the performance.
“I think that was one of our better performances of the year,” Shuttleworth said. “Overall, happy with the performance, disappointed with the result.”
Texas A&M welcomes back Riley Crooks. She served a one-match suspension due to a red card booking at Vanderbilt and will be available for the contest.
The Aggies own a 10-8 record in the all-time series, including four wins in the last six. Because of a scheduling quirk, the teams have not faced off since the 2022 campaign. The Aggies earned a 4-1 victory after Maile Hayes and Macy Matula each found the net in the first 12 minutes. It was a milestone victory for former head coach G Guerrieri, who earned his 500th career coaching win. With a close series, most matches have been tight, with 14 of the 18 games decided by one goal, including 10 final scores of 2-1.
Florida travels to Ellis Field with a 4-3-3 overall record and a 0-1-2 mark in SEC play. The Gators have collected two points through three conference matchdays, earning a 2-2 draw at Mississippi State and a 1-1 home draw against Texas. Florida is still searching for its first road win of the season, posting a 0-2-2 record away from home while conceding eight goals across those four matches.
Kyra Taylor and Zoe Main lead the attack with five and four goals, respectively, while each has also contributed three assists. Florida has yet to record a clean sheet in conference play, making its defensive performance a key factor as the Gators search for their first SEC victory.
