KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The No. 19 Texas A&M volleyball team gears up for the second-annual Shriners Children's Showdown at the Net ACC/SEC Challenge where it will face No. 4 Stanford at the State Farm Field House Wednesday with first serve set for 8 p.m.
The Aggies gear up for their second interconference event, as they travel to the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex to face the Cardinal. In the opening year of the event last season the Aggies fell to SMU in a three-set battle.
Texas A&M and Stanford have met six times in their history, with the Cardinal holding a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series. The programs have met once in a neutral setting, and it was the Maroon & White who came out on top in a five-set thriller in 1995.
The Maroon & White are coming off a pair of hard-fought losses last time out in the Big Ten/SEC Challenge Week versus then-No. 14 Purdue (3-0) and then-No. 21 Indiana (3-2). Kyndal Stowers was the standout for the Aggies, breaking the program record for points in a five-set match versus the Hoosiers. The outside hitter recorded 29 kills, five blocks and a pair of aces to reach her point tally, while tacking on 11 digs to mark her first double-double of the year.
Eliza Sharp and Gabi Rodriguez have anchored A&M’s defense through the opening seven games of the season. Sharp has been a force at the net, recording 41 blocks in 25 sets of work. Her total ranks second in the NCAA and her 1.64 stuffs per frame lands her second in the SEC. Rodriguez has impressed in the back row, surpassing double-digit digs in all-but-one contest, including the last five straight. The freshman sits just 17 away from reaching 100 in her career.
