GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – The No. 4 Texas A&M women’s golf team stormed back to claim runner-up honors at the Folds of Honor Collegiate Wednesday after freshman Emerie Schartz shot 3-under 69 at the American Dunes Golf Club.
“We just wanted a chance to play, and I think we took advantage of it,” Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “We got off to a good start and probably weren’t as clean as we wanted to be in the middle of the round. But we put a run on them at the end and got really close. You can drive yourself crazy over one shot, but this was a good showing for our first time out.”
Texas A&M was eight shots back of the lead at the start of the day and fired a 5-under 283 to come up just one stroke shy of tying for the tournament title. No. 8 FSU (-3) took home the championship. No. 6 Duke (-1), No. 29 Arizona (+2) and No. 30 Kansas (+5) rounded out the top five. The Maroon & White shot 2-under 862 for the 54-hole tournament.
The Aggies took the lead as they finished their round, but FSU put two birdies on the board to claim the title. Texas A&M has finished top two in seven straight fall tournaments, dating back to Oct. 29, 2024.
Schartz picked up three strokes on the final seven holes of the day, including a near eagle on No. 18 that left her with a tap in birdie to finish the tournament tied for sixth at 2-under 214. Schartz’s top finish marks the second-consecutive season that a freshman has led the Aggies at the Folds of Honor. Fellow teammate Brynn Kort tied for second at last year’s installment.
“Emerie looked very comfortable,” Chadwell said. “In that moment coming down the stretch she looked very much in control. Knowing how she is wired, there are probably a couple shots she would want back but that is a sign of a lot of great things to come from her.”
All-American Vanessa Borovilos tied for ninth with a score of 1-under 215. The junior fired a 2-under 70 in round three to secure the top-10 finish.
Louise Reau tied for 12th at even-par 216 and Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Kort both shared 20th at 3-over 219. The Aggies were the only team in the field to have all five golfers finish inside the top 20 of the individual leaderboard.
Texas A&M returns to the course Sept. 21-23 at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic in Wolcott, Colorado.
