Aggies Dominate Final Day of Ted Nelson Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M track & field team won 14 events on the final day of the Ted Nelson Invitational Saturday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility.
The tone for the day was set in the center of the track, as the Aggie hurdlers and sprinters captured the first wins of the day. Ja'Qualon Scott dominated the 60m hurdles from start to finish, winning the prelims in 7.65 and followed that up with a blistering 7.59 to win the final and claim the third fastest mark in the nation this year. On the women's side, The Maroon & White punched two tickets to the final and Jasmine Harmon crossed the line third in 8.38, while Sofia Yakushina placed fifth in 8.48.
The women's 60m group held the momentum inside the oval, as Machaeda Linton headlined the group with a time of 7.32 to claim the title. She was followed by a deep Texas A&M contingent, as Morgan Davis placed third (7.40), Aysha Shaheed was fourth (7.42) and Anya Jackson finished seventh (7.53). Micah Larry impressed in the men's event with a time of 6.68 which was good for second, while Keanu Jones crossed the line fifth in 6.83.
Moving to the oval, Sophia Bendet added another mile title to her impressive freshman campaign. She crossed the line in a personal-best time of 4:46.05 which moved her up from No. 9 to No. 6 on the A&M all-time performers list. Elise Smoot finished right behind Bendet, taking second in 4:46.32, while Ondrej Gajdos took second on the men's side in 4:04.67.
Following suit in the 400m was Auhmad Robinson, as he ran a season-best time of 45.97 to take first place. He was followed by Kimar Farquharson in third (46.64) and DeMarco Escobar in fourth (46.88). On the women's side Jahnile Registre and Lacarthea Cooper both claimed podium finishes, crossing the line second (53.92) and third (54.42), respectively.
It was more of the same in the 800m events, as the Maroon & White swept the men's and women's crowns. Peter Narumbe impressed in his season debut of the event, logging a time of 1:47.24 which broke the facility record set by Sam Whitmarsh and entered him at No. 7 in the Aggie record books. Tharushi Karunarathna also topped the 800m leader board, claiming the women's race in a time of 2:10.32.
Taking the success to the field, Larry won his second long jump event of the season following a leap of 7.86m/25-9.50 in the second round of the event. His mark also debuted him at No. 5 on A&M's all-time performers list. In the women's event Morgan Davis also won her second title after recording a leap of 6.14m/20-1.75.
Flipping back to the track, Camryn Dickson delivered a 23.24 season opener to win the 200m, and then the 3,000m groups continued the rhythm by ensuring 1-2 finishes on both sides of the event. Debora Cherono crossed the line first in the women's event with a time of 9:23.90 which entered her in the record book at No. 4, while Joyce Kemboi ran a personal-best time of 9:24.08 to rank fifth all time. Youssef Asslouj topped the men's side with a mark of 8:05.98 and Jack Johnston was right behind in 8:08.99.
The Aggies ended the meet with relay dominance, led off by the women's distance medley relay team consisting of Smoot, Tyler Lowe, Bendet and Alexandra Fox who won the event with a time of 11:33.00 which was good for No. 8 all-time. The men's and women's 4x400m groups concluded the Invitational, as Eric Hemphill III, Robinson, Farquharson and Lawson Jacobs finished first in 3:07.27, while Cooper, Registre, Dickson and Yakushina brought it home in 3:37.30.
Lily Carlson also stood out on the day, logging her third colligate podium finish in the women's pole vault after finishing second with a clearance of 4.27m/14-0. Other notable performances included Etoro Bassey in the men's high jump with a personal-best mark of 2.14m/7.25 which was good for fourth in the event and 12th on the all-time list. Flipping to the women's event, Bradie Menegatti claimed second in her third colligate appearance with a leap of 1.75m/5-8.75.
