Cherono, Narumbe Highlight Aggies Record-Breaking Day

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M track & field's Debora Cherono broke her own women's mile school record, while Peter Narumbe ran the second-fastest indoor 800m by a freshman in NCAA history, Friday at the John Thomas Terrier Classic and PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational, respectively.
The Aggies' day started in Louisville at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational where the men's 800m duo of Narumbe and Reece Sharman-Newell set the tone for the weekend as they secured a 1-2 finish. Narumbe highlighted the pair, as he continued his historic freshman campaign winning his fourth-straight race to start his collegiate career with a personal-best time of 1:46.13. His mark ranks tied for second among freshman in NCAA history behind only Texas A&M all-time great Donovan Brazier, while also moving him up from No. 7 to No. 4 in Aggie all-time performers list. Sharman-Newell also had a career day, finishing second in the event with a time of 1:47.58 which enters him at No. 10 in the Aggie record book.
Moving to the group in Boston at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, the women took to the track and hit the ground running. Cherono stood out among the rest, breaking her own school record in the mile in the invitational section of the event after clocking a time of 4:36.34. The sophomore downed her previous best of 4:38.08 which she set at this same meet last season.
Elise Smoot and Sophia Bendet ran in the open section of the mile, each recording personal bests. Smoot jumped from third to second in the A&M record book with a time of 4:40.59, while Bendet climbed from sixth to third all-time after crossing the line in 4:43.22.
Joyce Kemboi kept the momentum going in the 5,000m, debuting at No. 2 in the all-time performers list with a time of 16:00.74 which was good for seventh in the event. Megan Roberts also had a good showing, finishing 12th in 16:10.94.
Emma Little rounded out the day, logging a personal-best mark of 9:37.73 in the open 3,000m.
