STARKVILLE – The Texas A&M Aggies were edged out by the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 2-1, despite being more menacing on the offensive end Friday at MSU Soccer Complex.
The Aggies owned a 15-11 advantage in shots, including 12-2 in the second half, but were unable to pull back a 2-0 deficit. The visitors also had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks for the match.
The Bulldogs (8-1-4, 2-0-4 SEC) blitzed the Aggies for a pair of goals midway through the first half, scoring in the 21st and 25th minutes. Mississippi State went into halftime with a 2-0 advantage behind its 9-3 margin in shots and 4-2 corner kick advantage.
The Aggies were on the foot coming out of the intermission, taking the first nine shots of the second stanza. The visitors were able to cut the deficit in half in the 54th minute when Lucy Landherr scored her first career goal. She put home a carom after Ireland Churchill’s shot from six yards out was snuffed out.
Texas A&M (4-9-0, 0-6-0 SEC) had two golden chances to tie the game. In the 60th minute Taylor Jernigan had a header from 10 yards out hit the inside of the post and the goal line before being cleared away. In the 70th minute the Mississippi State goalkeeper needed to go full extension to keep a Churchill laser out of the net.
The Aggies were playing without its two starting center backs with Ava Sexton attending a U.S. Soccer U18/U19 national training camp and Juliet Haras out due to injury.
The sound of the whistle was like an echo with 43 fouls called in the match.
Texas A&M suffered its sixth one-goal loss of the season.
