Montoya Surges to ITA Texas Regional Quarterfinal

  • Kori Montoya recorded her first collegiate ranked win.
  • Montoya is 3-0 through her first three collegiate singles matches.

WACO – Texas A&M freshman Kori Montoya picked up two wins on day three of the ITA Texas Regional Championship Saturday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center to advance to the quarterfinals.

Montoya battled through three sets to take down No. 99 Valerie Shue of Texas Tech, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, picking up her first collegiate ranked win. The freshman continued to shine as she took down Nithesa Selvaraj of Rice, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the ITA Texas Regional quarterfinal. She will face off against Baylor’s Na Dong Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

Fellow freshman Sydney Jara dominated the round of 32 making quick work of Petja Drame of Houston, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Jennifer Jackson of TCU in the round of 16.

In the consolation bracket, Yoana Konstantinova battled off Hitakamya Narwal Singh of UTRGV, 6-3, 6-3, to advance in the consolation bracket.
