COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M soccer team returns to Ellis Field for Sunday’s 2 p.m. contest against the LSU Tigers with teams making their charge toward the SEC Tournament.
Last time out, the Maroon & White battled to a 0-0 decision home to No. 6 South Carolina. In what was a rough-and-tumble affair, the Aggies controlled most of the game in the Gamecocks’ half, peppering the net with 23 shots and forcing South Carolina’s goalie to be at her best. Sydney Fuller anchored the Aggie defense in her first start of the season. Fuller snatched the match from the jaws of defeat with a crucial penalty kick save in the 85th minute after Finley Lacher was whistled for a handball on the goal line.
The Aggies (4-9-1, 0-6-1 SEC) currently sit 15th in the SEC standings with one point through seven matches of conference play. If the Maroon & White hope to battle for silverware at the end of the season, they will need positive results in their last three matches.
The 2026 edition of Texas A&M soccer is heavily reliant on freshmen. The Aggies had nine freshmen play in the season opener, including five in the starting lineup. All told, 11 fresh- men have played through the first 14 matches. They have combined to play 6,145 of the 13,860 minutes (44.3%). Ireland Churchill leads the team with 1,115 minutes on the pitch. Ava Sexton (996), Makenna August (907) and Finley Lacher (921) also rank in the top six among Aggies in minutes played.
Churchill and Trinity Buchanan lead the Aggies in scoring with 17 points apiece. The duo is tied for seventh in the SEC with seven goals each and they both have contributed three assists.
Texas A&M’s offensive intensity has ratcheted up in recent contests. They outshot Mississippi State 12-2 in the second half and owned a 23-14 shot advantage over South Carolina.
The Aggies own a 12-1-4 edge in the all-time series. The Maroon & White suffered their first defeat at the hands of the Bayou Bengals last season when LSU scored a 4-1 victory in Baton Rouge. The initial meeting came at the NCAA Tournament second round in 2009. The teams played to a 1-1 draw with the Aggies advancing on penalty kicks, 4-2. Texas A&M won the next 12 meetings by a combined tally of 29-5. The teams played to draws the next three seasons before last year’s LSU victory.
LSU enters the matchup with a 3-9-3 overall record and a 1-4-2 mark in SEC play. The Tigers have collected five points through seven conference matches, with their lone league victory coming in a 2-1 win at Florida. Three of their four SEC losses have come against ranked opponents in No. 8 Tennessee, No. 16 South Carolina and No. 21 Oklahoma. The Purple & Gold battled No. 23 Arkansas to a 2-2 draw in Baton Rouge. They are coming off a 4-1 loss at Texas.
Ava Galligan leads the Tigers' attack with seven goals and one assist on the season. LSU has found the back of the net in all seven conference matches but has struggled defensively, conceding 17 goals during that stretch. On the season, the Tigers have scored 21 goals while surrendering 30. The Purple & Gold have not recorded a clean sheet since their second match of the campaign and have yet to register one on the road.
