Aaron Pounds Named SEC Golfer of the Week

By Kelly Shipp

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M’s Aaron Pounds was named the SEC Golfer of the Week after winning his first individual collegiate title of the season at the Abilene Christian Intercollegiate, the league office announced Wednesday.

Pounds is the second Aggie golfer this season to earn SEC Golfer of the Week honors, joining Wheaton Ennis who earned the honor on Oct. 7.

Pounds, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, earned his third career SEC Golfer of the Week honor, first this season, following his dominant victory at the inaugural Abilene Christian Intercollegiate. His victory also helped guide Texas A&M to its first team championship of the season. This was Pounds’ third career individual title, but his first solo tournament victory after tying in his previous two victories.

Pounds won the Abilene Christian Intercollegiate after shooting an 8-under par 208 on the par 72 course. Pounds started the event strong, ending the first round tied for second after shooting 3-under. Following the first round, Pounds took the top spot on the leaderboard with a 4-under second round before holding on to it after going 1-under on Wednesday.

Pounds tied for the 11th-most birdies with 11 and finished tied for 9th in total pars with 37. He earned his first eagle of the season on the 617-yard, par-5 seventh hole in the second round of the event. Of the 48 golfers, Pounds was one of two golfers to have two rounds in the 60s. He was one of just 14 golfers to shoot under par for the 54-hole event.

Pounds and the Texas A&M men’s golf team will close out the fall portion of its schedule this weekend, Oct. 31 through Nov. 1, in Loxley, Ala., at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational. Last season, the Aggies won the Steelwood Collegiate after shooting 10-under 566 as a team. Pounds finished tied for fourth after shooting a 5-under 139 over the two rounds played.
