KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii
– The No. 15 women’s golf team placed fifth at the Nanea Invitational with Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio leading the way with a share of fifth individually Tuesday at the Nanea Golf Club.

“I think we had a good fall,” Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “It wasn’t great and there are a lot of things that we need to get better at. We saw a lot of good things this week, but we did not finish well. In order to go from good to great, you have to consistently do the little things well. I am thankful for a good year for our program, and this break will be good for us to get better going into the spring.”

Texas A&M shot 14-under 862 for the tournament after turning in a 3-under 289 in the final round. Arizona State (-33) took home the team title while Stanford’s Meja Ortengren won the individual crown at 18-under 201.

Fernández García-Poggio notched her second-straight top-five performance of the season. The All-American shot 9-under 210 at the Nanea Invitational. Sky Sudberry finished with a piece of 18th after going 1-under 218.

Vanessa Borovilos tied for 25th at 1-over 220 while Emerie Schartz took home a share of 32nd with a 3-over 222 week. Louise Reau rounded out the group in solo 40th.

Texas A&M returns to the course in the spring at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

The Nanea Invitational was hosted at the Nanea Golf Club, which will also host the Nanea Cup March 11-14. The Nanea Cup is in partnership with the LPGA and will bring together the world’s best 95 Tour athletes and elite collegiate golfers in a first-of-its-kind competition. Texas A&M is one of five participating universities, along with Arkansas, Texas, UCLA and Stanford.

“To be able to go around this course four times in prep for the spring tournament is invaluable,” Chadwell said. “The course will probably play even harder when we come back because it will be set up for a tour event, but the experience to come out here is huge for us. This will probably be a tournament that we get to come out to more in the future because of the status of the program.”
