COLLEGE STATION – The No. 14 Texas A&M volleyball team swept Alabama for its fifth-straight win Friday evening at Reed Arena, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19).
The Aggies (9-5, 2-0 SEC) rolled past the Crimson Tide (8-4, 0-3 SEC) behind the support of the sixth-largest attendance in program history as 5,917 members of the 12th Man packed the stands. Megan Fitch led the team offensively with a career-high 14 kills, while hitting at an efficient .310 percent. The Maroon & White block also stood out, as the group finished with 12 on the night, led by Lolufe Adedeji’s five. She was followed by Fitch, Brooke Lacewell and Djurdja Stanojevic who each had four.
Texas A&M came out firing in the first, racing out to a 10-6 lead with freshman Lacewell at the net stuffing three swings in the respective run. Alabama responded to hold a one-point gap at the midway point, 15-14, but The Aggies countered with a blistering 11-4 streak to seal the opener, 25-18.
The second opened with back-and-forth scoring, as the programs found level on at every point to 4-4. The Maroon & White captured the momentum behind a pair of aces from Kyndal Stowers, two kills from Lacewell and an Alabama error which forced a Crimson Tide timeout, 9-4. The visitors answered with a 15-8 streak to lead late, 19-17. Needing to reply, the Aggies did just that, outscoring their opponents 8-3 in the red zone with a kill from Stowers ensuring the frame, 25-22.
Racing out the gate in the third was A&M, as it forcing an early timeout from Alabama, 6-3. The teams traded points throughout the early portions, with the Aggies holding a 15-13 lead at the midway point. The Maroon & White maintained their rhythm, never allowing the visitors to close the gap as they took the set, 25-19, and match, 3-0.
