BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M forward Ireland Churchill was named SEC Freshman of the Week following her standout performance in the Aggies' 5-1 victory over Ole Miss Sunday afternoon. It marks the first conference weekly honor of her career.
Churchill recorded her third consecutive match with a brace, tallying two goals and one assist to help the Maroon & White secure their first SEC victory of the season. She registered five braces on the season, including four in SEC play.
The Eastvale, California, native leads the nation in goals among freshmen with 13 and ranks second with 30 points. Her 13 goals moved her into a tie for fifth place on Texas A&M's freshman single-season goals list. She also became the first Aggie freshman to reach double-digit goals since Liz Keester in 2013.
Against Ole Miss, Churchill registered 10 shots and five points. She opened her scoring account by dribbling through multiple defenders before firing a snapshot through traffic into the bottom left corner. Churchill added her second goal after capitalizing on a loose back pass from the Rebels and calmly slotting the ball past the keeper.
