FAYETTEVILLE – The Texas A&M track & field team advanced five athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on the second day of the NCAA West First Round Thursday at the John McDonnell Field.
The Aggies carried their momentum into day two of the west regional, as five total tickets were punched to the national championships with four coming from the women and one from the men. The group also tacked on nine quarterfinals spots on the track across four different events.
The Maroon & White's javelin success continued to Friday and set the tone for the afternoon, as the Fairchild sisters secured the women's teams' first two spots in Eugene. Katelyn qualified for her third NCAA Championships and took third in the event following a throw of 56.11m/184-1 in the opening round. McKenzie earned her first berth at the national meet, recording three competitive attempts which culminated in a toss of 53.18m/174-6 in the final round to take seventh.
Staying strong in the throws, Carlie Weiser earned qualification to her first national championships following a 12th-place finish in the shot put. Throwing out of the second flight of the event, she saved her best attempt for last and recorded a personal-best mark of 16.43m/53-11 which held throughout the final two sections to ensure her ticket to TrackTown.
Tacking on the fourth ticket of the day was Morgan Davis in the long jump. Competing in a stacked field, the SEC indoor and outdoor champion held her nerve and delivered a leap of 6.34m/20-9.75 in the second round that fended off the competition and landed her 12th overall.
Following a weather delay which pushed the men's pole vault event back a day, the defending outdoor national champion, Aleksandr Solovev, made it back-to-back trips to Oregon. The senior entered the contest at the third bar and was one-and-done, clearing 5.37m/17-7.25 which provides him the opportunity to defend his NCAA title.
Taking the track first for the women was Jaiya Covington in the 100m hurdles and the senior didn't disappoint. She ran in the final heat of the opening round, clocking 13.08 for the win and advanced fifth overall to the quarterfinals.
Continuing the momentum was the Aggies' sprint trio of Camryn Dickson, Jasmine Montgomery and Anya Jackson, as all three earned automatic qualification to Saturday's 100m quarterfinals. Dickson ran the second-fastest overall time of the prelims in 11.09, Montgomery won the second heat of the event in 11.22 and Jackson clocked 11.41 which was good for third in heat one.
Two more advancing spots were claimed in the 400m, courtesy of Lacarthea Cooper and Jahnile Registre. Cooper ran in the final heat of the event and recorded a time 51.61 which was good second in the section and seventh overall. Registre ran just before in the fifth section and crossed the line in 52.17 to earn her spot in the next round.
Rounding out the results on the track on day two was once again the decorated sprint group of Dickson, Montgomery and Jackson in the 200m. All three earned automatic advancement for the second time, as Dickson ran the fastest time of all competitors, clocking 22.54, she was followed by Montgomery in 22.65 and Jackson 23.14 who finishes first and second, respectfully, in heat two of the contest.
