
Fernández García-Poggio Advances to Quarters of The Women’s Amateur Championship

GULLANE, Scotland – Texas A&M's Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio claimed two match play victories Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of The Women's Amateur Championship at Muirfield.
Fernández García-Poggio defeated Ohio State's Nellie Ong 1UP in the third round to earn her spot in the quarters. The Madrid, Spain, native was also victorious over fellow Aggie teammate Vanessa Borovilos in the second round, 5&4, and beat the No. 10 amateur in the world and 2024 U.S. Women's Amateur Champion Rianne Malixi of Duke, 3&2, in the opening round.
Against Ong, Fernández García-Poggio led wire-to-wire after taking the reins of the match on hole one and never relinquishing the advantage.
The rising senior qualified for match play by one stroke, tying for the final spot with a score of 4-over 146 thru 36 holes. In the quarterfinals she will take on fellow Spaniard and No. 4 ranked amateur Andrea Revuelta of Stanford.
Fernández García-Poggio's quarterfinal match tees off at 2:32 a.m. CT and the semifinal tilt is scheduled for a 7:42 a.m. CT start if she were to advance. Waiting in the semis will be the winner of the Farah O'Keefe and Morgan Ketchum bout.
Fernández García-Poggio is one of the most accomplished match play golfers in program history, boasting a 7-2-1 collegiate record and a perfect 5-0 record at the SEC Championship. Fernández García-Poggio is ranked No. 40 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking and turned in an All-SEC First Team junior campaign.
