Three weeks down, three weeks to go.
For new head softball coach Trisha Ford, an "extended" spring of sorts is paying dividends before the start of the 2023 season on February 9. The team reported on January 3 and had its first practice the next day. With classes just starting this week, it allowed the Aggies to focus exclusively on softball.
"It's been good," Ford said. "I think we're progressing nicely. Obviously, we're still implementing our system and getting them kind of acclimated to us and us to them. But it's been very enjoyable. We brought them back super early and had about ten days of double days and working hard--and that was great. We both needed it. I needed it, they needed it. I really enjoyed it. They're itching to play another team instead of themselves."
You never really know what a roster will end up looking like after a leadership change, not only with the shift in coaching but also with the emergence of the transfer portal. But Ford says the returning players--seven starters and 10 letterwinners, including three pitchers--have really been a group ready to learn and get better.
"It's been enjoyable. They've just been open-armed and very, very welcoming. They're a great group of ladies and they want to be coached hard and they want to get pushed. They want to get to work and learn."
And the adjustment of a whopping 11 newcomers, a mix of talented freshmen and impact transfers from power programs?
"It's been great. And I think the reason why is because of the returners here and how they've transitioned them in. When we came back in January, you could just kind of feel like we're starting to click, our motor was starting to go. And that's fun."
Ford has herself adjusted to life in College Station, and says she can't wait to step out in front of the 12th Man when the Aggies open the year at the Texas A&M Invitational three weeks from today.
"This is what I wanted. I've always wanted that feel of being part of a community, but with big-time athletics. I love the camaraderie that comes with Texas A&M.
"So we're working hard. We want to make the 12th Man very, very proud of us and put a great product out here. We're going to get better, I promise, every year."
