Texas A&M cross country and track & field student-athlete Chance Gibson passed away in an automobile accident Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 11:20 a.m. as he returned home from College Station for the holiday break, according to his family.
“Words cannot express the loss of Chance,” head coach Pat Henry said. “Chance was a great young person with a bright future. He will be missed by everyone that came in contact with him. It is a sad day for Texas A&M, and our hearts are broken for his family and friends.”
Distance and cross country coach Wendel McRaven said, “Our hearts are broken. Chance was a bright, funny and determined young man. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gibson family. As a coach and a parent this is really tough. It is going to take us all a while to wrap our heads around this tragedy.”
“This is a tragic moment for the Gibson family, Texas A&M and for our cross country and track & field programs,” Director of Athletics Ross Bjork said. “On behalf of everyone at Texas A&M Athletics, we offer sincere condolences to Chance’s family, his teammates and his friends.”
2021-22: Cross Country - Competed unattached in two meets...Ran in the Aggie Opener 5k, placed 26th at 16:38.5...Competed in the Texas A&M Invitational finishing the 8k course with a time of 25:41.6.
High School: Was a three year letter winner coached by Juris Green...As a senior he finished fourth in the 1600m (4:17.98) and fifth in the 3200m (9:30.37) at the UIL Region 2-6A meet...Was the UIL 6A-District 13 runner-up in the 3200m at 9:33.11, placed fourth in the 1600m at 4:24.27...Finished third at the UIL Region 2 cross country championships...Was a UIL 6A State Cross Country Championships qualifier, placed 24th overall while helping his team finish third...As a junior he was part of the cross country team that finished second at the state championships...Posted high school personal best times: 800m - 1:56, 1600m - 4:16, 3200m - 9:18, 5000m (xc) - 15:11
Personal: Son of Jana and Spencer Gibson...Has one older sibling, Kara, and two younger siblings, Caden and Cambree...Father Spencer graduated from Texas A&M in 2001, uncles Jeff Gibson '99, Jonny Gibson '03 and Dave Gibson '04 are all former students of Texas A&M.
