David Cooney joined the Texas A&M football staff in June 2025 as the Associate Director of Recruiting/Acquisition.
Cooney arrived in Aggieland after more than 20 years of experience in coaching and player development, including recent roles as wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator at Bowling Green State University and senior quality control analyst (wide receivers and running backs) at the University of Miami. He has developed position-specific training programs, analyzed game film to enhance player performance and collaborated with coaching staff to implement effective game strategies.
In his final season at Miami in 2024, the Hurricanes averaged 348.2 receiving yards per game, which was third-most in the nation. Additionally, Cooney helped the Hurricanes to the ACC Coastal Championship and a berth in the ACC Championship Game.
Previously, Cooney served as director of recruiting for the Miami Hurricanes, where he led football recruiting operations, evaluated prospects nationally and managed official visits and compliance processes.
In 2022, Cooney worked with the Los Angeles Rams as a Bill Walsh Minority Internship Football Coach where he assisted with special teams and the wide receivers, as well as position meetings and practice preparations.
The Miami, Florida, native has deep roots in the South Florida football community with coaching stops at Southridge Senior High, Coral Gables Senior High, South Dade Senior High and Coral Reef Senior High. As offensive coordinator at Southridge in 2016, Cooney helped guide the Spartans to the Florida Class 8A state championship.
Cooney earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida Atlantic University in 2005. He is committed to fostering a culture of discipline, resilience, and teamwork, mentoring student-athletes to excel both on the field and in the classroom.
