The 2017 season marks Trevor Johnson’s second season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M. In addition to his recruiting duties, Johnson is responsible for coaching the setters, and he also is involved in the day-to-day decision making and planning.
The former National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) volleyball coach of the year has experienced much success as a both a coach and player and has the distinction of being the only person in NAIA history to win a volleyball national championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
In only his first season at Texas A&M, Johnson, 34, spearheaded the signing of a recruiting class that was ranked 18th in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com and included three players ranked in the recruiting website’s top 100 Senior Aces. He also oversaw junior setter Stephanie Aiple, who was named Honorable Mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
Johnson, 34, came to Texas A&M from Baylor University, where he served one season as the top assistant coach for his former college coach and mentor, Ryan McGuyre, who was in his first year as the head coach of the Bears.
Prior to reuniting with McGuyre at Baylor, Johnson amassed an impressive 86-14 record as the head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at Concordia University in Irvine, California. Johnson began his stint at Concordia Irvine as an assistant coach for the women’s team in 2011. He made an immediate impact and was named the AVCA Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year and also was the recipient of the AVCA Thirty Under 30 award after the Eagles finished national runner-up with a 37-2 record.
In 2012 the Concordia women were crowned the NAIA national champions after going a perfect 38-0. It wouldn’t be the only national championship for Johnson.
Following his national championship run as assistant coach of the women’s team, Johnson was promoted and appointed the task of establishing Concordia’s men’s volleyball program and also serving as the team’s head coach. In the first year of his head coaching career, Johnson led the Eagles to the national championship title in the program’s inaugural season. Concordia finished its maiden season 25-7, and Johnson was named AVCA NAIA Men’s Coach of the Year, NAIA All-Tournament Coach and Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) Coach of the Year.
In 2013, Johnson was named the director of volleyball at Concordia, serving as the head women’s coach while also overseeing the men’s volleyball and sand volleyball programs. The women reached the semifinals of the NAIA National Championship and finished 27-3. In 2014, the Eagles, ranked in the top three the entire season, reached the quarterfinals of the NAIA tournament and finished the year 34-4.
In two seasons as the head coach, Johnson’s women’s teams went a combined 61-7 (.897) and won two Golden State Athletic Conference titles. In addition, his players garnered seven NAIA All-America citations, and he had one player named 2014 AVCA NAIA Freshman of the Year.
Prior to joining the staff at Concordia, Johnson served two stints as the assistant men’s and women’s volleyball coach at his alma mater, California Baptist University (2007-09, 2010-11), where his teams compiled an overall record of 127-39 in five seasons. Johnson helped guide the Lancers' men's volleyball team to the 2011 NAIA National Invitational title and a runner-up finish in 2009, as well as victories against ranked NCAA Division I foes UC Irvine (No. 2), Stanford (No. 3) and UC Santa Barbara (No. 6). The women finished runner-up at the 2007 NAIA National Championship and reached the semifinals in 2008.
While at California Baptist, Johnson assisted in the development of three NAIA All-Americans and one GSAC Player of the Year honoree, while also helping to produce two AVCA NAIA Player of the Year recipients on the men's side. He also coached the player who currently holds the school’s career assist record, previously held by Johnson.
Johnson began his coaching career in 2006 as graduate strength and conditioning coach at Cal State Fullerton. He left the Titans in 2009 and served as assistant men's volleyball coach at Long Beach City College. In 2010, Johnson returned to Cal State Fullerton for a season, working as the director of women's volleyball operations while also completing a master’s of science degree in kinesiology with a concentration in strength and conditioning.
Johnson experienced a stellar high school playing career in which he was a two-time league MVP and named the 2000 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Player of the Year after leading Gahr High School to the state championship title.
Johnson went on to become a four-year starting setter at California Baptist, where he led the Lancers to back-to-back NAIA national titles in 2004 and 2005. He was the NAIA national championship assists leader in 2003 and 2004 and finished his career as CBU’s all-time assists leader with 3,820, a record that stood until 2011.
Following the completion of a bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology from CBU in 2005, Johnson trained with the USA Men’s National Volleyball Team for two years.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in Cerritos, California, Johnson and his wife, the former Jane Kim, have an 8-year-old son, Riley, and a 3-year-old daughter, Chloe.
