Drew Smith joined the Athletics Department as Sports Science PhD Fellow in August of 2022.
In his role, Smith leads all sports science related tasks with Women’s Basketball. Responsibilities range from daily team monitoring, assessments, consolidation of data, and providing coaches and Performance & Wellness staff with reports and data-informed recommendations to assist in their decision-making process. Additionally, he co-leads various analytics and visualization-related projects for the Sports Science unit, further strengthening the expertise on offer to our Performance and Wellness colleagues.
Academically, Smith is pursuing his PhD in Kinesiology at Texas A&M under co-chairs Dr. Jenna Yentes from the Department of Kinesiology and Dr. Hye-Chung Kum from the Department of Public Health. He received a Bachelor's of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2021 and his Master of Science in Sports Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2022.
During his time in the Steel City, Smith had an active role with Pitt’s Football program. He primarily supported with the day-to-day use of Catapult and force plates as part of their athlete monitoring system. He worked with the performance & wellness staff to form upcoming programs for the team and produced visuals for the strength and conditioning staff to aid in their approach in creating practices.
