Katie Hughes was hired as a senior associate athletic trainer for football in April of 2021, after spending seven years at the University of California.
At Texas A&M Hughes assists in the prevention, evaluation, acute management, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illness on the football team. She coordinates and manages comprehensive student-athlete wellness plans for football student-athletes and serves as the liaison to multiple student-athlete support units around sport psychology, academic services and concussion management.
Hughes arrived at Cal in 2015 as a certified inter athletic trainer and a year later was hired as an assistant athletic trainer assigned primarily to football and supported other teams as needed. She assisted with practice and game coverage, emergency care, initial injury assessment and rehabilitation to student-athletes. Hughes provided oversight to certified intern athletic trainers assigned to football and women's lacrosse, and oversaw student volunteer workers assisting the football medical staff. She also coordinated the scheduling of outside appointments, surgeries and imaging for football student-athletes in collaboration with the insurance coordinator. Hughes oversaw facility medical clinic, including regular inventory and clinic management. She coordinated EMR medical documentation for football-Presagia Sports EMR, while also serving as Campus Administrator to the Pac-12 conference, overseeing the implementation of the Presagia EMR system for the sports medicine staff and campus initiatives/research using Presagia EMR.
Prior to her time at Cal, Hughes served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Utah, working as the primary athletic trainer for the men's and women's swimming & diving teams. She provided coverage for all practices and home/away competitions, including emergency care, initial injury evaluation and assessments and daily rehabilitation. Hughes served as a preceptor for athletic training students and assisted with clinical application of athletic training education program knowledge. She also worked as the a host athletic trainer, providing visiting team assistance during home football games.
A native of Montezuma, Georgia, Hughes graduated from the University of Georgia in 2013 with bachelors degrees in exercise and sport science, and athletic training. She earned a masters degree in exercise and sport science with a concentration in sports medicine from the University of Utah in 2015.
