Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame

Randy Barnes
- Induction:
- 2004
- Class:
- 1989
One of the most dominant shot putters in Aggie history, Barnes was an All-American in 1986 and won the Southwest Conference title in 1987 in the shot and again in 1986 & 1987 at discus. His shot put toss of 71-9 ½ is still the longest in Texas A&M history and the third longest by any collegiate athlete ever. Barnes is the fourth best discus performer to ever wear the Maroon and White. After leaving Aggieland, Barnes went on to further success, becoming a five-time USA Track and Field national champion in the shot put. In Olympic competition, Barnes continued to excel. He won the silver medal in 1988 and at the 1996 Atlanta games, he captured the gold. On July 27, 1996, Barnes was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated for his impressive efforts. Today, he still stands as the world record holder in the shot put and he will forever be remembered as one of Texas A&M’s greatest track and field athletes.
