Nathan Fast scored 17 points and Santa Clara snapped a four-game losing streak with a 60-48 victory over Texas A&M in the first round of the Cable Car Classic Wednesday.
Jamie Holmes added 13 points as the Broncos (6-6) advanced to the tournament championship against Butler, which beat La Salle 43-36 later Wednesday.
Bernard King led Texas A&M (3-6) with 14 points as the Aggies, held to their lowest output of the season, lost their third straight game and fourth in the last five.
The Broncos opened the second half by outscoring Texas A&M 18-3 in the first 4:35 to take a 38-14 lead, their largest margin of the game. The Aggies pulled to within 10 points and the score was 50-40 with 4:06 remaining.
Then King hit his second 3-pointer within 16 seconds, highlighting the Aggies' 8-0 run. Jerald Brown hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining to close the gap to 55-48, but the Broncos were 7-of-8 from the foul line in the final 1:03 of play to win it.
Santa Clara led 20-11 at halftime, thanks to a buzzer-beater by King, as Texas A&M tied its 1993 record for fewest points in a half. Texas A&M went more than 13 minutes without a basket and was 4-of-25 from the field in the half.
Santa Clara wasn't much better in the first half, going without a basket for 12-0 run.
