Larry Scott of St. James, Md., has signed a national letter-of-intent to play college basketball at Texas A&M, Aggies coach Melvin Watkins said Friday.
Scott, a 6-6, 215-pound forward, overcame an early-season injury to average 17.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season for St. James High School and connected on 41 percent from three-point range. Scott missed the first seven games with a severe ankle sprain. St. James finished the season 21-8, but was 18-4 with Scott in the lineup. As a junior, Scott averaged 21.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
Scott is a two-time second-team all-state pick in Maryland and is a three-time all-area selection. As a senior, he was nominated to the McDonald's High School All-America Team. He chose A&M over Alabama.
"Larry has three-point range and can play on the perimeter for us," Watkins said. "But because of his strength he has the ability to post-up for us as well. He's one of the top forwards in the East and is very skilled. Larry also played football and baseball and is a big-time athlete. We think his best basketball is ahead of him and that he has a bright future at Texas A&M."
Scott is Watkins' fifth signee this year and second of the spring signing period. Earlier this month, A&M signed 6-11 center Andy Slocum of West Monroe, La. In November, Watkins signed 6-5 guard Bernard King of Gibsland, La., 6-1 guard Jamaal Gilchrist of Middleburg, Va., and 6-7 forward Carlton Brown of Temple (Texas) Junior College.
