Kantrail Horton hit a 3-pointer to atone for a late turnover and start a 10-0 run that carried Iowa State to a 65-58 victory over Texas A&M on Wednesday night.
Iowa State proved to be stronger down the stretch after A&M, coming off an upset of Oklahoma State, rallied from a 10-point deficit to twice take the lead. An 11-1 run capped by Aaron Jack's three-point play pulled the Aggies into a 52-51 lead with 4:20 left.
After Jamaal Tinsley put Iowa State back ahead with a pull-up jumper on the baseline, Jamaal Gilchrist swiped the ball from Horton and drove for a layup to put the Aggies back on top, 54-53 with 3:32 to play. Twenty seconds later, Horton got open in the left corner against the A&M zone and knocked in the 3 to make it 56-54.
Iowa State, sluggish most of the game, then came alive to finally take control.
Marcus Fizer, held to three points in the first half, sank two free throws, then scored on a putback, battling for the rebound after he missed his first attempt. Tinsley sank a free throw to make it 61-54 and hit two more after an A&M turnover for a 63-54 lead with 41.9 seconds left.
A&M managed only one basket after Gilchrist's steal and it came with 14.9 seconds remaining, after the game had been decided.
Gilchrist's 14 points led A&M and Bernard King scored 10. A&M outrebounded Iowa State 34-25.
