Sophomore forward Tomas Ress has been hospitalized since Monday with appendicitis and a staph infection and will be out of action indefinitely, Texas A&M coach Melvin Watkins said Wednesday. Watkins also said senior forward Aaron Jack suffered a concussion in practice on Oct. 18 and also will be out indefinitely.
"This is a setback for us, but first and foremost we are concerned with the health of those two young men," Watkins said. "We'll welcome them back as soon as they are able to come back. It's a wait and see situation for us."
Ress's appendix was removed on Monday night and he remained under treatment for the staph infection in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph's hospital until Wednesday, when he was moved to a private room. Jack, who suffered three concussions as a freshman at Penn State in 1996, is being evaluated on a daily basis. Jack could return to "limited contact" practice late next week.
Ress, a 6-10 forward from Salorno, Italy, averaged 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds last season, and started in 12 games. Jack, a 6-9 forward from Tulsa, Okla., started in 23 games last season, averaging 8.2 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game. Jack earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors.
