The annual Texas A&M student-athlete-sponsored "AGGIES CAN" canned food drive produced over eight tons of non-perishable food items for the needy of the Brazos Valley last weekend. AGGIES CAN is a joint effort of the Texas A&M Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SACC) and Aggie Athletes Involved (AAI).
Approximately 85 Aggie student-athletes participated in the event and collected 17,800 cans of food weighing a whopping 16,100 pounds last Friday and Saturday at the Texas A&M vs. Baylor football contest at Kyle Field. The student-athletes also received $2,200 in donations.
"We were extremely pleased with the turnout," said former A&M swimmer Devin Howard, who organized AGGIES CAN. "Our goal was 16 to 17,000 cans of food and we collected over nearly 18,000. Next year's goal is 20,000 cans and I'm pretty sure we will be able to get that."
Last year's AGGIES CAN food drive during the 2000 A&M vs. Colorado contest produced 10,400 cans of food.
