Freshman Duke Butler carded a one-under-par 71 on Monday to lead Texas A&M to an eighth-place standing after the first day of the rain-shortened Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
Butler is tied for ninth in the individual standings, four strokes behind first-round leader Jason Powell of Tennessee, who carded a four-under-par 67. Mississippi's Troy Muller is in second place with a 68 on the par-72, 7,002-yard layout.
Monday's afternoon round was cancelled because of heavy rains. Tuesday's final round is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
Tennessee leads the team standings after firing a nine-under-par 279, four strokes ahead of SMU's 283. Mississippi is in third at 284, followed by host Louisiana-Lafayette (288), Tulsa (291), Baylor (293), Colorado (295), A&M (296), Sam Houston State (300), Kansas (302), North Texas (302), Missouri (305), New Mexico State (311) and Nebraska (313).
While Butler was the only A&M player among 20 who shot par or better in the first round, fewllow freshman Stephen Reed aided the Aggie cause with a 73, while sophomore Dwayne Morley carded a 75, sophomore Matt Lindholm posted a 77 and junior Josh McCoy had a 78.
