Texas A&M men's golf coach Bob Ellis will offer free 10-minute lessons on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the University Golf Course in conjunction with "Play Golf America," the national growth-of-the-game campaign sponsored by The PGA of America and Golf Digest magazine.
Throughout the month of May, participating PGA professionals will offer free 10-minute lessons to help golfers of all levels improve their games. More than 3,500 PGA professionals throughout the United States have agreed to participate.
To sign up for "Play Golf America," contact Ellis at 845-4533.
"Play Golf America is a wonderful opportunity for local non-golfers to come out and get introduced to the game of golf, or for existing golfers to focus on any area they want to improve," Ellis said. "We welcome all those who would like to participate, regardless of skill level."
A four-time conference coach of the year who was elected to the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in 1998, Ellis will retire after this, his 27th season at A&M. Each summer, he conducts the renowned John Jacobs Golf Schools on the A&M campus. At A&M, his teams have advanced to the NCAA Championships 15 times, finishing in the top 10 four times. Ellis has coached 29 All-Americans, including current PGA TOUR veterans Jeff Maggert, David Ogrin and Danny Briggs.
Ellis has been selected to coach the U.S. team at the Palmer Cup this summer at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., which will pit the top eight American collegians against the top eight from Great Britain and Ireland in a Ryder Cup-type format. In 1995, Ellis coached the U.S. team to victory at the World Junior Championships in Japan.
The PGA of America is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1916 to promote golf and enhance the livlihoods of its members. The association includes more than 25,000 men and women professionals who are committed to the growth of the game of golf.
