Bernard King scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Texas A&M basketball team to an 80-74 upset win over No. 24 Texas Wednesday before 10,602 fans at the Frank Erwin Center.
The win in Austin was the first for the Aggies since 1987, and it snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Longhorns dating back to 1994.
A&M (8-11, 2-3 Big 12) used strong shooting from the floor to get the win, connecting at a 59.5 percent clip including a 7-of-12 (.583) effort from behind the arc. The hot shooting countered a season-high 25 turnovers for the Aggies.
Trailing by four at the break, Texas A&M used a 20-3 run to start the second half to open a 52-39 lead with 15:20 to play in the game. The Aggies did not miss a shot during the run, going 7-for-7 from the floor-including two 3-pointers-and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Texas (13-5, 4-1) put together a run of their own, an 8-0 effort, to pull within three at 60-57 with 8:41 to play. The Aggies lost two inside men to foul trouble-Keith Bean at the 5:31 mark and Tomas Ress with 3:01 to go-as the Horns trailed 67-65 heading into the final media timeout.
King hit a jumper with 2:22 left, and followed that with two free throws at the 1:42 mark to increase A&M's lead to six. Texas would get no closer than five the rest of the way, as the Aggies connected on 20-of-23 second-half free throws to hold onto the lead.
The Aggies took their first lead of the game with 3:34 left before halftime when a 3-pointer by Bernard King put A&M ahead 29-26. The Aggies would extend their lead to as many as six with 2:06 to go in the half before Texas, aided by two of A&M's 15 first-half turnovers, closed out the half on a 10-0 run and led 36-32 at the break. King paced the Aggies' 59 percent 1st-half shooting effort with 13 in the frame.
For the game, A&M out-rebounded Texas 37-to-27 and shot 59.5 percent from the field, including 58 percent from behind the arc.
Nick Anderson scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Texas A&M, while Bradley Jackson poured in 12 and Larry Scott 11.
Texas was led by James Thomas' double-double effort of 15 points and 10 boards. Deginald Erskin scored 14 and Brian Boddicker added 13.
Texas A&M returns to action on Saturday when they play host to the 2nd-ranked Kansas Jayhawks at Reed Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CST).
