Bernard King scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Texas A&M men's basketball team to a season-opening 70-55 victory over Texas Southern Sunday night before 3,373 fans at Reed Arena.
The Aggies (1-0) were up by 15 at the break and held a double-digit lead through most of the second half until the Tigers (0-1) cut the deficit to nine on a Ra'Kim Hollis 3-pointer with 5:31 to go.
A&M responded, however, by going on a 9-2 run in the next 2:24 to put the game out of reach.
Hollis led all scorers on the night with 20 while teammate Lionel Willis was the only other TSU players in double figures with 13.
King was the only Aggie in double digits. Marcus Watkins scored nine points while Keith Bean, Antonie Wright and Nick Anderson added eight.
The Aggies return to action on Tuesday when they hit the road to battle the Miami Hurricanes. Tipoff at Miami Arena is set for 6:30 p.m. (CST).
