The Texas A&M men's golf team carded a final-round 299 on Tuesday and finished fifth at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
SMU won the team title with rounds of 291-282-291=864, finishing nine strokes ahead of runners-up Tulsa (873) and Baylor (873). Texas-San Antonio was fourth at 875, followed by A&M (287-292-299=878), Colorado (879), Kansas (881), Texas Tech (881), North Texas (882), Missouri (889), Memphis (890), Southern Mississippi (891), host Louisiana-Lafayette (893), Arkansas (900) and Rice (925).
SMU's Jerome Theunis won the individual crown with rounds of 70-70-73=213, three-under-par on the par-72, 7,002-yard layout. Baylor's Ryan Baca was second at 214.
Senior Sean Gilliland led A&M, tying for fifth place with an even-par total of 73-73-70=216. Also for A&M, sophomore Stephen Reed tied for 15th at 75-71-73=219, sophomore Parker Briley tied for 40th at 72-75-77=224, junior Dwayne Morley tied for 45th at 71-75-79=225 and freshman Tyler Garrett tied for 45th at 71-73-81=225.
"We beat some teams in our district that we needed to beat and probably had our best tournament of the year, but it's a little bittersweet," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "We had a chance to place much higher, but finished the round very poorly. That was disappointing, but overall I'm happy with our progress."
The Aggies return to action March 25-26 at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin.
